Experience
I have been an individual tutor for over 2 years using time-tested methods with students of varying skill levels and motivations For the SAT, ACT, SHSAT, ISEE, and grade-level classes. When I retook the SAT and the ACT, I scored in the 99th percentile for both tests. I tutored myself in these tests, with the understanding that superior performance includes intelligence and dedication. I enjoy sharing these skills with students. I begin by learning the student's strengths and weaknesses and his or her's learning style. Then, I tackle the specific question types each student struggles with and building a step-by-step process he can repeat. This may include grammatical rules, mathematical equations, or educated guessing. Then, practice is key. Each student's performance increases as she dedicates herself to learning and practicing these new ways of approaching questions. If timing is a factor, which it is for most students, I discuss time management and educated guessing. All the while, consistent encouragement helps each student feel confident in his performance on test day! Test anxiety can be a major hurdle; however, I use my psychology background to give students confidence on test day. I have experience with adolescents in a clinical setting from Johns Hopkins Bayview, as well as in a mentoring program at Goucher College. I have tutored students from 4th grade for the lower level ISEE through 11th and 12th grades for the ACT and SAT. These different settings allow me to speak to each student's individual learning style.
